Mapping of 600 km of roads and 1,500 km of sidewalks and bike paths; first municipality to use Floating Car Data for real-time trafficability monitoring
Hanseatic City of Lübeck – Condition Assessment of Roads, Bicycle Paths, and Sidewalks, as well as Maintenance Management and Demand Forecasting
Industry: Road Infrastructure Management
The Hanseatic City of LĂĽbeck aims to manage its transportation infrastructure based on up-to-date and continuously available data. In addition to traditional condition assessments, new data sources should therefore be integrated to identify changes in the network at an early stage and plan measures efficiently. These include measurement surveys of roads, sidewalks, and bike paths, as well as floating-car data from Volkswagen production vehicles. The goal was to consolidate all this information into a central platform and make it usable for maintenance management.
With ONE.byHeller, the Hanseatic City of Lübeck has a central platform that consolidates condition data from measurement campaigns, floating car data, and information from road inspections. This provides a continuously updated picture of the network’s condition—ranging from high-resolution ZEB data to monthly indicators of drivability. The city can identify changes in the road network early on, prioritize maintenance sections, and plan measures based on data. At the same time, images, maps, and key metrics are available centrally and transparently for various administrative functions.
"The City of Lübeck demonstrates what modern infrastructure asset management looks like in practice. ONE.byHeller brings together a wide range of data sources—from high-resolution survey campaigns and floating car data to observations from routine road inspections—to create a comprehensive view of network condition. This provides a reliable, data-driven foundation for planning and prioritizing maintenance activities across roads, cycle paths, and sidewalks more efficiently."
